Erection of wall type sandwich panels

Erection of Wall Type Panels (СПС)


Sandwich Panels are used as independent non-bearing walling constructions.  According to architectural design of the object, the layout of the panels could be both horizontal and vertical. 


Horizontal Layout

In the horizontal layout of wall Sandwich Panels, it is recommended to take into account a single-span load distribution, as well as to limit the length of the panel up to
6 meters.  The erection of wall panels in a horizontal layout is recommended to start with the angle, and with that panel, which rests at the joint, thus facilitating the erection process.  The erection of wall panels is possible on already set foundation (basement), or without it.  It is necessary to lay a waterproofing of at least 2 layers on the basement, set the flat strips, and ensure clearance of 20 mm between the base and the panel to fit in foaming or lay the mineral wool sealing belt.  The panel is verified against metal frame according to the working plan, and if necessary, an adhesive sealing tape is glued.  The panel is set down in a groove.  Mounting of the panel is done to the posts or columns of the framework with self-tapping screws.  Mounting is performed top down, the quantity specified in the project documentation.  If necessary, the sealant is applied to the lower interlock to seal it.  The next panel is mounted in a groove down the previous panel, pin on top, and fastened similarly to the previous one.  Removal of slings of the panel is made only after complete consolidation of the panel with self-tapping screws to metal frame.  Subsequent panels are mounted along the perimeter of the building in accordance with the instructions on the vertical layouts in the documentation. Periodical check should be provided to the vertical and horizontal erection of panels (with gauges) and the strength of the junction of interlock. 
After erection of all the panels is done, all joints should be properly sealed: the vertical joints between the panels, are usually foamed, the vertical angles are compacted with mineral wool or foaming (in accordance with the project), the horizontal, ground, window, door gaps around the perimeter, usually filled with foam.  When filling the gaps make sure to maximize the density of the closing (filling). 

After sealing the joints, the shaped elements are mounted (flat strips and sinks, interior and exterior).  The supplied flat strips are of a limited length, so they set overlap, in this place must be riveted joint rivets (at least 2 pieces at joint), to increase the containment and elimination of bloating flat strips.  The mounting is done top down, the subsequent flat strip overlaps the bottom one for 50 -
100 mm. according to mounting diagrams and schemes, to avoid getting moisture under the flat strips.  If necessary, the shaped elements are trimmed and fitted.  The shaped elements are mounted to the panels with self-tapping screws or rivets at the step of 250 - 300 mm
If necessary, a sealing of flat strips to the panel joint is done by the sealant.

In the horizontal layout of panels, a girder should be installed every 8 -
10 meters.  Along the slope of the roof, an inclined bolt should be installed necessarily for mounting cut wall panels.  Free unattached end of the panel can not be more than 500 mm

If there are framework intermediate struts between the axes of the columns, then first set the self-tapping screws into them, then top down.  It is necessary to remove stress in the metal during panels sagging and to prevent delaminations of the foam coverings and further deformations.  To avoid such a situation, it is necessary to limit the length of the panels up to 6 meters, i.e. the distance between the columns should be no more than 6 meters.
 

 

Setting the panels with a groove up and a spike down is UNACCEPTABLE because it leads to the penetration of moisture into the Sandwich Panels, which could lead to a loss of strength and destruction of the panel.  

 

 

Vertical Layout


In the vertical layout of wall Sandwich Panels use of one-, two-and multi-span load distribution is possible, but at the same time, it is necessary to limit the distance between bolts, which the panels are attached to, up to 3 meters.  When erecting vertical panels the panels longer than 8 meters are not recommended.  It is recommended to use a vertical layout for buildings with height up to 5 meters, as an arrangement of panels visually increases the building height.  The erection of vertical panels is usually started from the corner of the building, however, sometimes it is advisable to start the erection from the center of the building to reduce the trimmed parts of the panel and ensure the normal binding to the crossbars.  The mounting orientation should be indicated in the working drawings of panels’ layout.  The erection of wall panels is possible on already set foundation (basement), or without it.  It is necessary to lay a waterproofing of at least 2 layers on the basement, set the flat strips, and ensure clearance of 20 mm between the base and the panel to fit in foaming or lay the mineral wool sealing belt.  This gap reduces the possibility of deformation of metal cladding panels in the central parts and in intermediate zones of attachment to the crossbars.  If the building height exceeds the height of the panels, the erecting of panels is started with the base and extends with the individual tiers upwards until the desired height is reached.  There should be a compensation joint of 20 mm set between the individual tiers, and unloading girder set every 8 - 10 meters.  Free unattached end of the panel cannot be longer than 500 mm.  The panel is verified against metal frame based on the project shall be verified in binding to the axes, the elevation, the horizontal and vertical planes, if necessary, an adhesive sealing tape is glued at the abutment places of panel to the metal frame.  Mounting of the panel to the crossbars is done with self-tapping screws from the upper end of the panel, into each girder, falling down, the amount specified in the project documentation.  During vertical erection of the panels, the focus should be made on ensuring enough effort during the docking of adjacent panels.  To ensure a reliable connection of interlock device, the panel pressing is made with special clamping mechanism.  Docking panels in any other way (like applied shock) is forbidden.  If necessary, according to project documentation, a sealant could be applied to the outer or inner lock of mounted panel. 

Removal of slings of the panel is made only after complete consolidation of the panel with self-tapping screws to metal frame.  Subsequent panels are mounted along the perimeter of the building in accordance with the instructions on the vertical layouts in the documentation.  Periodically check the vertical and horizontal installation of panels and gauges the strength of the junction of the interlock compound.  After erection of all the panels is done, all joints should be properly sealed: the vertical joints between the panels, are usually foamed, the vertical angles are compacted with mineral wool or foaming (in accordance with the project), the horizontal, ground, window, door gaps around the perimeter, usually filled with foam.  When filling the gaps make sure to maximize the density of the closing (filling).  After sealing the joints, the shaped elements are mounted (flat strips and sinks, interior and exterior).  The mounting of the flat strips is done in the same way as for horizontal layout (see the mounting / erecting description). 

All exterior horizontal joints between the flat strips and the wall along the plane junction must be sealed with sealant for exterior works, no gaps and cracks are allowed.  


Method of Fixing СПС Panels in Vertical Layout

 

 

1. Corner panels are fixed to all crossbars of wall framing: СПС 980 per three self-tapping screws.

2. Middle panels are fixed to the crossbars at the top and at the bottom of p 1, to the rest crossbars - with two self-tapping screws. 

3. When installing the wall panels in a horizontal or vertical layout, the width of the heel should be at the end support no less than 80 mm, at the intermediate - no less than 140 mm (see Fig. 4).
